10 online presences to find out everything about HTML5 and CSS3

HTML5 and CSS3 were some of the most used terms in web design community last year and it seems that the trend will keep in the next year. As you probably know, this byname practically describes the base of the next best practices in creating websites. Even if, the skeptical/conservator ones considered that the previous versions were still OK, the Internet must evolve and clearly, new ideas and techniques must be created. The need for more interactivity, the easiness of accessing websites and the wish to bring in our lives the new web 3.0. are imperatives that simply determinate the improving of the previous versions of HTML and CSS.

On the other hand, the mobile devices bring a new approach for coding websites. The multitude of displays is a real problem but there are many other aspects that need a new strategy in order to create very accessible websites no matter which terminals are used. The term “responsive design” is designated to represent all these techniques to make websites accessible for all devices and quite probably will share the same importance with HTML5 and CSS3.

Under these circumstances it is easy to understand that the next few years will represent a cornerstone for design and development. A coder that ignores HTML5 & CSS3 and responsive design is one that simply doesn’t want to exist, therefore the study of these is mandatory. The great news is that these aren’t totally new, in fact there are many improvements of the old versions and just few 100% novelties.

The web designers are always busy and the time spend to search for the latest news about the new versions may be saved by bookmarking this post because here are added the best online resource in this field. Definitely, a complete designer must seek for the books of experts or listen to various podcasts but clearly, this post is very useful. Much more, not to waste much time, there are only ten sources, the very good ones, but it doesn’t mean that there aren’t other great online presences deserving to check for staying updated on the Internet.
Without practice, all the lectures are in vain so there remains the old advice, universal valuable: practice is gold!

Harnessing the power of social media for commercial gain

Social media, the buzz phrase of the last few years, is here to stay. The utopian vision of what the Internet might become has surpassed even the most idealistic of early expectations. In contrast to printed media such as newspapers and magazines, the phenomenon that is social media refers to online media content that in some way garners participation, contribution and feedback from users. Social networks, forums, podcasts, blogs and content communities are all examples of social media communities where users share a common interest such as photography, travel or a favorite TV show.

Examples of social media include YouTube, Blogspot, MySpace, Twitter, Foursquare and Linked In, but the most recognized example is the social networking site, Facebook. Launched in 2004, by Harvard University student and now legendary Mark Zuckerberg, the leader of the social media pack has attracted over 500 million active users to a site that is second only to Google in global popularity. Over 50% of users access the site at least once a day, interacting with over 900 million objects like pages, groups and events.

18 Innovative Retro Logos – Old is Gold!

There is a common expression that “History repeats itself”. This is increasingly true in the case of trends and fads. Each and every industry has its own sets of trends that come and go every now and then. Similar is the case with the design industry where trends are always short-lived. There are some styles of logo designing that were famous in a certain point in time but lose their vigor after a while.

One familiar style of logo designing that has risen from the past is retro or vintage logos. Theses form of identities were prevalently used a couple of decades ago in the shape of crests and badges. When you employ this style in the present day and age, you signify your business picture as a culturally active company with rich brand heredity. Retro logos utilize grunge and other old-style effects to carve out a culture-oriented and mature corporate entity.

With the intention of demonstrating what retro logos actually look like, here is an innovative collection of 18 retro style logos:

For SEO, Your Competitor Is Your Best Friend

For some SEO is simple, while for others it’s a dangerous animal. It’s dangerous because you don’t know how it will behave. It’s unpredictable, frivolous and follows the master – Google. In this situation, your competitor is probably your best friend.

Which keywords is your competitor using?

I assume you know your competitors. Even if you don’t it doesn’t matter. You simply search for a specific keyword and you will get a list of competitors. These websites are doing well and we might as well look at their keyword strategy. To do this, you first have a look at the source code. In Chrome, you select   Wench – Tools – View Source. In Firefox, you must select Tools – Web Developer – Page Source. By doing this you will get to see the source code of the page. Sometimes and to some people this code will be daunting. My advice is not to be afraid. Go forth and explore the jungle. Once you get used to it you will access some of the most useful information. You will know which keywords and combinations are used by your competitors. You have to simply replicate the same. Let me tell you that this strategy works and works well.

Getting a handle on backlinks

With the latest Panda update, Google search algorithm has taken a massive tilt towards backlinks – also called reputation by Alexa. You must therefore know which all links your competitor has managed to get. There are many tools out there which track backlinks. The best among them is Alexa. It’s also free. By using Alexa you will know exactly which sites are linked to your competitor. This is a golden mine of information. For example, my website deals with car title loans and I simply tracked the backlinks of my competitor using Alexa. This took me less than a minute. Within a week I had over a hundred qualified links back to my site.

Mind-Mapping 101: Why It’s Perfect for Designers

Whether you have a high stress job, a stay at home parent (talk about high stress), or just have a lot of things to do, everyone has moments when things get out of control. To tell you a little bit about my current situation: I just moved to California from Illinois so I need to buy all new furniture. I am moving on Saturday, but unfortunately the new bed I bought cannot be delivered until two weeks after my move in date. I decided to pick it up and rent a UHaul, but I have just discovered that I cannot find my license anywhere (so my ability to rent a UHaul is looking questionable). I now have to go get a California driver’s license on my one hour lunch break (good luck to me) and hope that I pass the vision and 36 question test. The next step is to get California plates sometime before I get pulled over and they realize I have a California license. Fortunately, I only have one day to figure this all out. Did I say fortunately? I meant incredibly unfortunately. Needless to say I’ve been feeling a bit frantic.
